EU and UK Compliance - Suffocation Warnings

EU and UK Compliance - Suffocation Warnings

Overview

In this guide, we will explain the requirements for suffocation warnings, to meet EU and UK compliance regulations.

Minimum bag size (practical trigger)

Warnings are typically required where:

  • Opening ≥ 125 mm (5 inches)
  • OR bag is large enough to fit over a child’s head
  • The suffocation must be on the packaging in every language if the bag opening is greater 5 5 inches

🔹 Wording (commonly accepted)

There is no mandated EU text, but this is widely used and accepted:

“Warning: To avoid danger of suffocation, keep this plastic bag away from babies and children. Do not use this bag in cots, beds, prams or playpens.”

🔹 Placement

Under GPSR principles, the warning must be:

  • Directly on the bag (not just outer packaging)
  • Clearly visible and legible
  • Contrasting colour
  • Durable (won’t rub off easily)

If printing on the bag is not feasible:

  • It can be on a label attached to the bag
  • Outer packaging alone is not sufficient if the bag is removed
