Recycling and Logo Requirements

Recycling and Logo Requirements

Overview

If you sell packaged products to consumers in France, your packaging must include the Info-Tri recycling logo.
This helps consumers understand how to correctly sort and dispose of packaging materials. The requirement forms part of France’s environmental regulations and is managed by Citeo under the AGEC Law (France).
This guide explains what the logo is and what you need to do to stay compliant.

The components of the Sorting Info marking

Based on your product and packaging, a number of different elements, will build the recycling logo requirements.
Our Expandly software will help build these requirements however, we have included more more information on this below, so you are aware of these requirements and what is needed.
The Info-Tri logo is a recycling instruction label that appears on product packaging.

It tells consumers:
  1. Which parts of the packaging can be recycled
  2. Where to dispose of each part
  3. How to sort the packaging correctly
This normally includes:
  1. The Triman symbol (indicating the product must be sorted)
  2. Icons representing packaging components
  3. Instructions for the correct recycling stream
Example packaging parts may include:
  1. Bottle
  2. Lid
  3. Box
  4. Plastic film
Each component must show the correct disposal method.

Who needs to use it?

You must include the Info-Tri logo if you:
  1. Sell packaged goods to consumers in France
  2. Place household packaging or printed paper on the French market
  3. Are responsible for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) obligations
This applies to:
  1. Brands
  2. Importers
  3. Online sellers shipping to France
A compliant label usually contains:

1. Triman Logo
The Triman symbol indicates that the product must be sorted for recycling.

2. Packaging Components
Each packaging element should be shown separately if they are made from different materials.
Examples:
  1. Bottle
  2. Cap
  3. Carton box
  4. Plastic wrap
3. Disposal Instructions
Each component must indicate the correct disposal stream, such as:
  1. Recycling bin
  2. Glass collection
  3. General waste

Where must the logos appear?

The Info-Tri label can appear on:
  1. Product packaging
  2. Instruction leaflets
  3. Product manuals
  4. Online product pages (in some cases)
The label must be visible and readable for consumers.

When is the label required?

  1. The requirement applies to all applicable packaging sold in France.
  2. If you sell products without the correct recycling label, you may not meet French EPR compliance requirements.

Examples of Products that require the recycling logos?

Common product categories that require Info-Tri labeling include:
  1. Cosmetics and personal care products
  2. Electronics and accessories
  3. Household goods
  4. Food and beverage packaging
  5. Printed paper materials
As long as the sorting instructions are the same, you can create one universal logo, that can be used internationally:

How to stay compliant?

To meet French packaging regulations, businesses should:

1. Register with the appropriate EPR compliance scheme.
2. Obtain the correct Info-Tri label format.
3. Apply the label to product packaging or accompanying materials.
4. Ensure instructions accurately reflect each packaging component.
