Overview
Your LUCID number belongs to you — the producer
— not to your EPR service provider. When you switch to a new provider, your
existing LUCID number is retained and updated in the portal. A takeover of the
number by a new provider is not possible, and termination of the LUCID
registration is not required when changing provider.
Can the LUCID number be taken over by a new provider?
No — and this is a technical limitation of the system,
not just a policy choice.
The LUCID system prevents more than one VAT number or taxpayer
reference number from being registered. Since the LUCID number is bound to the
producer's legal identity, it cannot be transferred, reassigned, or taken over
by a third-party provider.
When it a termination of a LUCID Registration required?
Termination of a LUCID registration is only appropriate when a
producer permanently exits the German market — i.e. they will no longer place
any packaged goods on the German market at all.
Termination is NOT required when:
• Switching from one dual system or EPR service provider
to another.
• Changing the company's trading name or brand names
(these are updated within the existing registration).
• Temporarily pausing sales in Germany.
• Moving to a different compliance management approach
(e.g. in-house vs. managed service).
Please Note: Terminating a LUCID registration while still
placing packaged goods on the German market is a compliance breach under
VerpackG. The ZSVR confirms registration must remain active for as long as
goods are being sold. Terminating and then re-registering would also result in
a new LUCID number, which could disrupt marketplace listings on Amazon, eBay,
and others that have the existing number on file.
