What is a Digital Certificate?
A digital certificate in Spain is an official, government-issued electronic ID (often called a Certificado Digital or Firma Digital).
An electronic certification issued by the FNMT-RCM (Spanish National Mint and Stamp Factory).
Links the subscriber to a verified signature and confirms their identity.
A digital file installed on your computer, not a physical document.
Allows you to sign documents electronically with full legal validity.
Why is it needed for EPR?
Under Spanish EPR laws, producers and importers must:
Register in official producer registers.
Submit periodic reports on products placed on the Spanish market.
Communicate with government portals and compliance schemes (SCRAPs).
To do this, a company or its legal representative must log in and sign forms electronically using a digital certificate. Without it, registration or compliance filings cannot be completed.
Who needs it?
Spanish companies: Use their company’s NIF + digital certificate.
Foreign companies selling into Spain:
- May appoint an authorized representative in Spain with a digital certificate.
- Or, in some cases, obtain their own Spanish digital certificate, linked to their Spanish tax registration.
