EPR - Spanish Digital Certificate
Overview
The FNMT Digital Certificate for a Natural Person is an electronic certification issued by the FNMT-RCM linking the subscriber with data of verification of signature and confirms their identity. This certificate is a digital file containing the user's identification data.
What is a Digital Certificate?
A digital certificate in Spain is an official, government-issued electronic ID (often called a Certificado Digital or Firma Digital).
-
An electronic certification issued by the FNMT-RCM (Spanish National Mint and Stamp Factory).
-
Links the subscriber to a verified signature and confirms their identity.
-
A digital file installed on your computer, not a physical document.
-
Allows you to sign documents electronically with full legal validity.
Why is it needed for EPR?
Under Spanish EPR laws, producers and importers must:
-
Register in official producer registers.
-
Submit periodic reports on products placed on the Spanish market.
-
Communicate with government portals and compliance schemes (SCRAPs).
To do this, a company or its legal representative must log in and sign forms electronically using a digital certificate. Without it, registration or compliance filings cannot be completed.
Who needs it?
Spanish companies: Use their company’s NIF + digital certificate.
Foreign companies selling into Spain:
- May appoint an authorized representative in Spain with a digital certificate.
- Or, in some cases, obtain their own Spanish digital certificate, linked to their Spanish tax registration.
How can I obtain a Spanish Digital Certifcate?
Option 1: Apply online via the official government website.
In addition to starting the application online, you would also be required to visit the Spanish Consulate to verify your identity/provide additional documentation (if needed), so the possibility of this would be reliant on whether of not you have a physical consulate, where you are located.
Option 2: Use Expandly’s trusted partner to obtain it on your behalf.
What's required to apply for a Spanish Digital Certificate?
To apply for an SDC, you will need:
-
Certificate of Incorporation (company registration documents).
NIF (Número de Identificación Fiscal) – the Spanish tax ID number - Please Note: A NIF is issued only after obtaining a Spanish VAT number.
Important Notes:
The certificate must be obtained in the company’s name, not an individual director’s name
The certificate refers to a file that is installed onto your computer, and asks as a form of identity online - It is important to note that this does not refer to a physical certificate to be issued, rather a file link to be installed:
